Tomato Milk...

For all you breastfeeding Mamas out there, have you ever had to severely restrict your diet or eliminate a certain food because it caused issues?

I know breastmilk is often 'flavored' from the foods you eat, ex. garlic, and is seen as an introduction of sorts for the baby to get used to the normal diet of the family. Neat huh?

However, I have noticed with Lil Chick (Bubbalu had this too) that whenever I eat a tomato based sauce she is extra fussy and has a hard time settling down for her naps and bedtime. So I've been trying to remember to back off on tomato.

Here is a neat link with a Q & A about foods nursing mothers should and should not eat, with scientific (evidence based) answers. They even addressed my tomato issue:

Can acidic foods that mom eats be "too acid" for baby?

No. Acidic foods like citrus, tomatoes, etc. can not change the acidity of breastmilk.

And I understand that, but it doesn't hurt me to avoid something that may or may not be causing Lil Chick some distress.

So, being the good Mom that I am, I was all confused why Lil Chick was SO unsettled Monday evening...until I remember I ate an ENTIRE can of Tomato soup for lunch...

DOH!

  1. Funny enough Skyler had awful gas whenever I ate pizza so I had to cut it out of my diet. But I tried it again recently and with a little Mylicon he was okay. I still try to limit it to "special occasions" :) Fortunately he is fine with pasta and such...b/c my Italian husband would not be happy to skip out on that!!!

  2. Tomato based products were our rthing as well. In fact the day after I had grace our friends brought us pizza for dinner and grace promptly projectile vomited all over our bed. That does not make eating the certain item worth it. Good luck with your food avoidance its difficult at times.

  4. A friend of mine's sons always got really bad diaper rash after she had anything w/ tomatoes. Tomatoes are also one of the later foods to introduce to your kids, so there must be something to it!

  5. I have had to restrict my diet with all my kids but this one. My firstborn was sensitive to dairy and citrus/tomatoes, and the twins were sensitive to that plus garlic and onions. So far with this one, I think I am ok, but I know how hard it is to restrict your diet. You hardly have time to eat, the last thing you need is to think about what you are eating that you nomally would be fine with, but now might cause an upset baby! I found tat if I messed up, Hylands Colic Tabs work great to soothe the tummy. Good luck!

  6. I've had 2 that are sensitive to dairy. I didn't realize that was what it was with one of them, until he was 2!!! When my 5 month old started showing the same symptoms, I immediately got rid of dairy and she was a different baby!
    DOH!
