Travel Trailer Makeover, Part 6: New Dinette! Recover those cushions!

OK yes, this travel trailer factory direct diamond pattern fabric has GOT to go. I decided to attack the entire dinette cushion recovering in one day. Because that's how I do things. Nothing for a loooooong time then a huge flurry of activity. Remind you of my blogging schedule!? :)

So yes, these cushions:

 From this dinette:

Five cushions to recover, including two rather oddly shaped triangular corner cushions. Hoo boy. This is gonna be a big job.

First off I took off the old covers and measured every single bit of them to draw up my cushion patterns. Then I cut out the flat panel patterns from the chevron fabric.....taking pains to make sure the colors and zig-zags lined up appropriately with the other cushions. And making sure the fabric wasn't upside down.

Because if it IS upside down you may waste a good yard or so of fabric. {Ahem}

I had to seriously muscle the foam into some of these covers but wanted to make sure they were a snug fit.  I bought a cover button pack and covered them in parts of the chevron fabric. I used a long, upholstery size needle (see pic) to thread the button strings through the thick foam. Once again, lots of muscle used! My forearms were super sore the next day!

And now, confession time: I did NOT want to struggle with putting fancy, neat zippers on these five cushions so instead I closed up the openings with safety pins :)  Once again, saved a ton of time, and they are all hidden inside the dinette frame anyways!

All in all I was very pleased with how these came out. MUCH more fresh and fun. Here you go, the finished dinette makeover:
And the before/after side by side shot:

Quite a difference, right!?

Next up: the dreaded COUCH project. OY.

A Beautiful Court Date...

I was in court today.

For an INCREDIBLE reason.

No no, I wasn't contesting a traffic ticket (never even been pulled over - holla!)

It was for a much more beautiful reason.

Remember my awesome sister Rebecca? Yaknow, the one who had a precious baby girl only three weeks before her newly adopted 6 month old son was brought home from Ethiopia by her husband Dusty?

( psst! You want to see some grown folk cry the Boo Mama coined "ugly cry"? Force them to witness a newly adopted child be brought home and placed into his exuberant and loving new Mamas' arms. Yep, ugly cry. But a GOOD ugly cry.)

Today, I witnessed my Father in court (haven't seen that since I was probably ten), who represented my Sister and Brother in law, as they finalized/re-adopted their sweet baby boy...my nephew!

It was an awesome day.

Except when Bubbalu bonked the JUDGE on the nose with the balloon airplane toy he was given right before entering the courtroom.

This Mother? Mortified.

The Judge was cool about it. After all, he's worked with my Dad for many years and has a heart for children. He was wiping away tears with the rest of us.

(Besides, I don't think you can hold a 2 year old in contempt of court.)

Welcome to the family Isaiah! We love you and are honored to be your family.

(psst! And your Auntie Amanda ALWAYS has cookies for you. ALWAYS!)

Welcome Home...

She was completely and all-encompassingly focused. You could try talking to her, but you wouldn't get far.

She stood amidst a swarm of strangers not seeing them or caring about them. It was busy and loud as families, spouses and friends were reunited. She couldn't hear them. She stood staring at the exit of the escalator waiting to see a familiar face. She was quiet. She was focused. She was waiting.

She's been waiting over a year for this moment. This moment that will forever be etched in her heart and mind.

She has a three week old precious baby girl. She has been a single parent for over a week as her husband has been gone on this journey. She is tired and emotional but eager.

Her brother whistles and motions that he can spot them coming up the escalator.

The video cameras start rolling...the cameras are turned on and ready to go.

Her heart is ready.

She first spots her husband's brilliantly smiling face. He has never smiled so brightly before...not even on their wedding day. It is a proud smile. A tender smile. A fatherly smile.

Next she spots a little dark head that he is carrying in his front pack. As he nears the top you can see two little dangling arms, two dangling legs.

She runs forward and clings to her husband and her new baby boy. They fumble with the many straps, struggle to lift him out and then finally, finally FINALLY she is at last holding him in her arms...and in her heart. She is sobbing and shaking as she holds him, the enormity of the moment overwhelming her.

She kisses her husband and turns to face her waiting family.

She walks over, shows him to us and says, "this is our son!"

He is introduced to his little sister. Their family has doubled in less than a month.

Welcome home Isaiah Melkiso. Welcome home and welcome into our hearts. You are muchly loved.

Love your Auntie,

Sweet Bundle Of Pink...

One of our siblings finally managed to produce a sweet bundle of pink who joined us June 25 weighing in at a perfect 6lbs 15 oz. While this is definitely unusual for our families and we aren't quite sure what to do with a baby girl, we'll just have to suffer through it and figure it all out.

Wouldn't YOU want to be an Auntie to this darling baby girl?:

Could her lips BE any more kissable? (*Heart squeeze*)

Welcome to our family Gabriella! Congratulations Dusty and Becca!

I am predicting many hours of tea parties, dressing up, dolls and one maybe two matching outfits for Gabby and Lil Chick.

We love you already Gabby...

Getting Some Time Off...

We are freshly back from a fabulously child-free weekend getaway. While the husband had to attend a seminar and talk shop with his other dental study club members, the wifey watched movies, drank coffee (sugar-free creamer!), read beach books and slept in.

I had every intention to do two hour gym workouts and an extensive distance run of the beach but couldn't seem to get up the gumption to leave my cozy quiet hotel room. Had it been a sunny weekend I would have planted myself on a beach chair and soaked up some rays like nobodies business, but the ever-present clouds dictated hotel room laziness. That and the lack of a perfectly svelticizing post-partum bathing suit may have contributed to the lazy decision.

Not that it was a problem.

I can do lazy.

My kids spent the weekend at Grandpa and Grandma's house, hanging with Aunties and Uncles and getting loved to bits. I'm pretty sure they didn't even know we were gone. As predicted, Bubbalu did NOT want to come home...proving once again that he thinks his Mama is exceedingly boring.

Seriously.

On a daily basis the kid asks to either:

A. Go to Costco? OK??

or

B. Go to Doctor? OK??

Really, how boring must I be if going to the doctor (where one gets multiple shots every visit) is more exciting than staying home? Embarrassing.

We ate delicious food (think catered beach front salmon feast), drank yummy wine (open bar) and lounged around like royalty.

I told the husband that he should seriously consider taking his wife away on a monthly weekend vacation/escape as she is feeling remarkably refreshed, reengergized and remotivated to be a stay at home Mama to two young children.

Even if aforementioned young children do think she is exceedingly boring...

She Has Arrived!!!

I see that my last post was Sunday December 7th. I was going a LETTLE nuts that day. Would have been nice to know I was delivering in 2 days. I might have been a tad more relaxed.

So here goes...

Monday the 8th I had an ultrasound which showed our little girl was not growing well at all. She went from the 18% to less than 10% in two weeks...NOT GOOD. So, they decided to induce me.

Then ensued a brouhaha over the state of my IV and the possiblities of any IV access. I am normally a very vascularly blessed person. Phlebotomists LUV me. However. Thanks to the pre-eclampsia my vessels were less than cooperative. Let's just say I'll have the bruises for a few more weeks.

The day proceeded without much fuss and they decided since things weren't moving along they would give me a sleeping pill and start afresh in the morning.

Anyone have Ambien before??? Me either. I'm SOLD. I've doled it out many a time to patients on hospital bedrest but had never tried it myself. No side effects, and NO drowsyness. I was very pleased.

So, Tuesday morning I woke up refreshed, got yet ANOTHER IV (why not, the bruising really should be bilateral, right?) and we got ready for a more eventful day. First off I got a lovely epidural from a stellar anesthesiologist (my OB's wanted to keep my blood pressure down during labor, which meant NO PAIN...um...OK!). I was 4 cm so I had my OB pop my bag, then took a short 20 min rest time and was ready to deliver. Woot woot!

I huffed and puffed until my OB arrived and Emmy was born a short 15 minutes later:

She was whisked away rather quickly for evaluation as she was not tolerating labor all that nicely near the end. She recovered well and weighed in at a whopping 5 lbs 2 oz. I know, HUGE huh? What can I say, I make pipsqueak children.

Mama is relieved her baby girl is OK:

Papa is proud:

And Emmy better get used to being kissed:

Bubbalu is not quite sure why Mama is holding a baby:

But check it out! We now have a daughter:

Merry Christmas to everyone...

A Precious New Bundle...

We are delighted to announce the arrival of a brand new nephew!

Clint and Laura welcomed Levi Matthew (their third boy) on Friday morning weighing in at 9lbs 2oz and measuring 21 inches long.

Who wouldn't LOVE to cuddle that cute little man!? Caleb and Micah were already busy teaching him how to be a boy. They gave him quite a few smooches too, just to make sure that he knew they loved him.

SO adorable.

Congratulations Clint and Laura!!!

Sun and Summer Love...

Well, my sister and I are back from our week in Phoenix. We are a bit more tan, MUCH more relaxed, and very rested.

We mastered the art of a Phoenix vacation by laying in the sun much of the day and watching movies while pigging out on yummy snacks during our sun break times.

We had great plans for working out in the air conditioned gym adjacent to the pool, but never seemed to make it over there.

Wanna know why? This is the pool:

Yeah, that's why.

I couldn't bake in the sun as intensely as I normally would have done. I just didn't think my baby would appreciate body temperatures around 100 degrees, so I mostly hung out on the side of the pool and read a book (well, I actually read 4 books, and played numerous Sudoku games).

I also drank almost a gallon of water a day and watched a total of about 10 movies. Not too shabby!

The highlight of the trip was witnessing a dear cousin of mine be married to her sweetheart. And while we (my Sister, Aunts, Grandma and girl Cousins) emulated the 'Big Fat Greek Wedding' scene the morning of the wedding at my Aunt's house, we managed to keep our craziness in check for the wedding ceremony and reception. Well, for the most part anyways. I am NOT posting a picture of me dancing the Twist.

For your enjoyment, a wedding picture tribute. Click on the play button to serenade your viewing:

Congratulations Bree & Nick, we love you guys!

Hello Cat, You May Now Exit The Bag...

Wanna know why I've been a slacker housekeeper, wife, friend, blogger and Mama lately?

Here's why:

That line is faint, but it's there! And by the way, the picture is dated 4-30-08, and we are eleven weeks along already.

Turns out blogging suffers a bit when you need a daily nap and spend all your awake time on the couch. Actually, almost everything in your life suffers a bit.

Bubbalu's been thrilled having Mama so close by all the time. I lay on the couch, he drives cars on my face. It's a good compromise.

So, We Bought Us A House...

And we're moving in a little over 2 weeks.

TWO WEEKS!

If I stick my fingers in my ears, squeeze my eyes shut and say, "lalalalalalala!!" I'm ok. If I don't? Then we are quickly boarding the train to freak-out land.

We have moved one too many times in the past few years. This house will be Bubbalu's FOURTH home. Yep, he's 18 months old.

After this move, I want to settle for a bit. Put down some roots. Finish unpacking from the last move. I don't like living in a constant state of turmoil and never knowing where "home" really is. I guess the good thing is that the people inside of whatever home we have been in these last 18 months have not changed. It's always been Papa, Mama and Bubbalu.

And that is what home really is.

Live From Ft. Lauderdale...

Coming to you live from the Internet access desk in the Ft. Lauderdale...(I'm not telling you the name )... hotel lobby.

Can I just say, red eye flights ARE.NOT.FUN.

My problem with the almost no sleep for 24 hours thing may have been compounded by the 4 hours of sleep the night before. That, and waking up at 5:30 AM to get to a stressful eight hour work day in the Antepartum unit.

But. I am on vacation, and having a blast so far! We spent the afternoon at the beach getting tan (red), reading, and sleeping. We went out to eat at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. (can you believe I've NEVER been there to eat? I KNOW!) then worked off some calories racing the length of the pool. I surprisingly even won a few times.

My 4th grade swim education resulted in a official-ish looking document, signed and dated, that proclaimed me a Minnow...I was ticked...I wanted to be a Shark. Lance was the BEST Shark in 4th grade, guess I just couldn't keep up.

So, I plan to be sleeping-in tomorrow, and then getting on the cruise ship.

What're all you nice folks up to?

Cruise Collage...Part Five and Finale!

We had a few more days of cruising to get back to LA. We baked in the sun and wind, ate a bunch, worked out because we like to torture ourselves on vacation, and savored our last days of freedom.

On our ship monkeys ran amok...

...and sunned by the pool.

This monkey looks pretty cute to me! I think I'll take him home with me!

Mrs. Monkey is smiling because she is excited to get home to...

...her sweet little man.
Her Bubbalu.

We had an amazing time, huge thank yous to the Grandparents for taking care of our sweet Bubbalu.
