In Which A Headboard Is Repurposed, Revamped and Sassified...

I bought this lonely, unwanted twin size headboard from the thrift store a month ago:

I've seen a bunch of headboard revamps around the blogisphere so I snatched that baby up.

It was on CLEARANCE. At a thrift store. What did I pay? $2.00 + tax.

That's right, TWO BUCKEROOS! The thrifty lady who dwells inside of me rejoiced.

I hauled it over to my parents house and cajoled my father into slicing off the legs for me.

I bet you can guess what I did next, right???

Sand, prime and spray paint. It's pretty much my new motto.

Then took a two week break (*ahem* FOUR) where I hemmed and hawed over how to finish up my project in an adorable, yet wallet-friendly (read: FREE) way.

First up, installed un-free (booooo) yet functional hooks:

Then hemmed and hawed some more before I personalized it and threw it on the wall. Well, not threw, but ya know what I mean.

Meet the newest revamped member of our family:

Why yes, I DID painstakingly cut out and decoupage every last itty bitty letter:

Oh, THANK YOU for noticing that it matches Wally:

My my, aren't we observant today!

Previously under used and not very gaze-worthy towel bar replaced with uber cute, functional (and thrifty) hooded towel hanger. Extremely tiny kids bathroom punched up with some sassy, low-profile functionality.

It makes me smile every time I walk past the bathroom. Sometimes I choose to use the kids' loo so I can smile while I, uh, you know.

And yes, I only have TWO children. What can I say, we give LOTS of baths around here which creates many towel needs. That, and I actually finished the laundry and was thrilled to be able to use my newly revamped...uh...thing. Headboardhoodedtowelhangerthingymajig.

However, at least I now
have a great place to hang my excessive hooded towel collection. (I actually have more hooded towels in the closet...shhhhhhhh.)

I have noticed that the beautiful apple green clashes HORRIBLY with my contractor dark yellow-beige bathroom walls...thus I will GLADLY welcome paint color suggestions!

  1. How darling! The decoupaged letters make it even cuter. With that many hooded towels you need a "showcase" :0) Wally is adorable too!

  2. That came out super cute. If you don't have a theme in there, I would the walls a Rubber Ducky yellow. As soon as I saw the Splish Splash in the headboard I started thinking about this --even before you asked for suggestions. I immediately thought--Oh it would be so cute to go with a rubber ducky theme. You could get paint pens in a bright blue and hand write around the top of your walls--splish splash I was takin' a bath all on a Saturday Night. Or you could go bright blue and add opaque bubbles and I would still write across the top.

  8. So...would you be terribly upset if I stole this idea for my batcave bathroom??? :) Oh and paint colors -- I would totally go with an aqua or a blue of sorts. FABULOUS with the letters you added to the towel hanger AND with wally! :)

  9. This is one of my favorite headboards yet! You did a great job. Every time I see them at the thrift store I pass them up, because I haven't found anything creative to do with them yet. Great job!

  10. Cool! Me likes. :)

    Colors that go with apple green (and would look great on the wall):

    * Navy blue -- if you're feeling bold
    * Any shade of brown
    * Any shade of gray
    * White -- *yawn*
    * Dark purple

    Just some thoughts I had. I love picking out colors! I've always wanted to do a room apple green and navy blue, with some silver accents. Fabulous!

  18. I love the towel rack, what a great idea! I have to recommend against a dark color for a small bathroom, where the whole wall is concerned. I did that once, and wasn't really happy with it. Of course, I painted the walls first, and nothing else got redone or made nice (it wasn't my bathroom), so that may have been the actual problem rather than the color. But it seems to me that if you have lots of brightly-colored accessories, neutral walls might not be a bad idea. I love Colonial Cream, by Benjamin Moore! (On another day, I will probably think that bright colors are the way to go).

  21. So great! Thanks for sharing...and I adore that green. I think it would pop with a vibrant but light blue...is that possible?

  25. Very cute Manders!!! For paint colors you could always do something different like blue or brown! ;) I will think about it!

  26. I love this! Waaay better than the we-have-so-many-towels-on-the-back-of-the-bathroom-door-it-won't-open-all-the-way thing that is usually going on in our bathroom :).

    I really like your choice of paint color, too!

  30. Hello there. I linked to you from Missy's "it's almost naptime" blog because your name Vintage Dutch Girl intrigued me. My email address includes the phrase "dutch girl" because my mom's side of the family is 100% dutch. Are you of dutch decent as well? As such, I can relate to your thrifty-ness. But the rest of your blog intimidates me, lol! You have some serious craft skill!

  31. Absolutely adorable! Much cuter and more interesting than a plain 'ole towel bar!

  32. Wow! What a great project. And you can never have too many hooks. I made my husband hang up 4 more hooks this weekend. Ah, bliss!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh wow... I can see why you led me back to your blog! Adorable! I mean, you have to put the hooks in something to stablize them anyway. A headboard is the perfect candidate!

    Very sweet!
